FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Lourie is New President of ASFEMay 2009 -- Silver Spring, MD: David E. Lourie, P.E., R.B.P., is the new president of ASFE/The Best People on Earth, a not-for-profit association of "earth-engineering" firms that employ 125,000 individuals worldwide. Welcomed into office at ceremonies during ASFE's annual meeting in Washington, D.C., Mr. Lourie is the 39th individual to serve as ASFE's president and chair of the group's board of directors. Mr. Lourie is the CEO of Lourie Consultants, a New Orleans-area
geotechnical-engineering and After earning his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in civil engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (Chicago), Mr. Lourie joined the staff of STS, Ltd. and, later, Fugro Consultants (formerly McClelland Engineers). He served as president of Fugro-McClelland (Southeast), Inc., based in New Orleans, before establishing his own firm. Mr. Lourie is active in an array of professional organizations and has served as president of the New Orleans Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies/Louisiana; president of the Lake Charles Branch of the Louisiana Engineering Society (LES); president of the New Orleans Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE); and an officer of the Institute of Brownfield Professionals. He has also served as an adjunct associate professor at Tulane University, a visiting lecturer at McNeese State University, and an invited speaker at the University of New Orleans and Louisiana State University. The author or coauthor of numerous articles and technical papers and a well-known lecturer, Mr. Lourie has served as a board member of the New Orleans-area School-To-Career initiative and is a volunteer advisor to a Tulane student group. Established in 1969, ASFE develops programs, services, and materials its member firms use to enhance the quality of their business and professional practices and thereby "prosper through professionalism." Member firms provide professional "earth-engineering" services; i.e., geotechnical, environmental, and civil/infrastructure engineering; construction-materials engineering and testing; brownfields revitalization and applied sustainability; geology, biology, and ecology; cultural-resources consulting; and construction and program management. All member firms' technical activities are under the full-time control of an individual who is legally and/or ethically bound to hold paramount public health, safety, and welfare. ASFE's associate membership comprises geoprofessional educators; geoprofessionals employed by government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, and industry; and attorneys and other consultants to ASFE-member firms.
